After months of speculation amid the work stoppage caused by the recently ended SAG-AFTRA strike, “Deadpool 3” is being delayed by the Walt Disney Company. The comic book threequel has vacated its May 3, 2024 release date and is now set to hit theaters on July 26, 2024.
It’s one of several moves that Disney announced on Thursday evening, as the studio rejiggers its theatrical release slate. “Deadpool 3” is now claiming the slot previously occupied by “Captain America: Brave New World,” which has been pushed to Feb. 14, 2025. Additionally, Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” has moved from Dec. 20, 2024 to July 25, 2025 and its upcoming “Blade” reboot has shifted from Feb. 15, 2025 to Nov. 7, 2025.
Beyond Marvel, Disney has also delayed its upcoming prequel to its 2019 CGI remake of “The Lion King.” “Mufasa: The Lion King,” directed by Barry Jenkins, has moved from a July 5, 2024 date to Dec. 20, 2024. Additionally, the studio has vacated two other dates — July 25, 2025 and Nov.

The film, which came out in April, dethroned “Barbie” for the No. 1 spot but took in a softer-than-expected debut of $25.4 million.

An Elon Musk biopic is in development at A24 with Darren Aronofsky on board to direct, Variety has confirmed.
Walter Isaacson’s authorized biography of the controversial tech mogul, which was published in September, will serve as the basis for the screenplay. Isaacson’s “Steve Jobs” book was previously adapted into the 2015 Universal film of the same name, starring Michael Fassbender as the Apple CEO.
Sources tell Variety that there was heated competition to option Isaacson’s book from studios and filmmakers alike, with A24 ultimately winning the bidding war. Aronofsky, who most recently directed last year’s Oscar contender “The Whale” starring Brendan Fraser, is known for his surreal filmmaking style, which often includes psychological elements. His past credits include “Requiem for a Dream” (2000), “Black Swan” (2010) and “Mother!” (2017). For his work on “Black Swan,” Aronofsky was nominated for the best director Oscar, while Portman ended up winning the best actress award.

Cord Jefferson didn’t always know he wanted to be a director. While working on Netflix’s comedy series “Master of None,” actor/writer/creator Aziz Ansari asked Jefferson out of the blue if he ever wanted to direct. Jefferson recalls, “I said, ‘No, I’ve never been to film school, I don’t know anything about cameras or lighting. I don’t think that’s for me.”
But Jefferson says Ansari’s response “planted the seed” for what would be a catalyst for him to tackle his directorial debut, “American Fiction,” based on the novel “Erasure.” “He said, ‘Dude, I went to NYU for business. I never went to film school. I’ve just been on sets and paid attention. All you need to do is hire people who understand the technical stuff and then be able to articulate what’s in your head.”

A little over a year after the shelving of Batgirl sent shockwaves throughout Hollywood, Warner Bros. is putting another of its films in the studio vault.
Warners no longer plans to release Coyote vs. Acme, a live-action, CG animation hybrid that completed principal photography last year in New Mexico. The move follows veteran animation executive Bill Damaschke taking over Warner Animation Group earlier this year.
“For three years, I was lucky enough to make a movie about Wile E. Coyote, the most persistent, passionate, and resilient character of al time,” filmmaker Dave Green wrote on X after this story initially published. “I was surrounded by a brilliant team, who poured their souls into this project. … Along the ride, we were embraced by test audiences who rewarded us with fantastic scores.”
The feature, which sources believe cost around $72 million ot make, had key Warners talent involved in front of the camera and behind the scenes.

Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock/Venom is no longer crashing the summer movie season, as Sony Pictures has pushed back the third “Venom” movie to Nov. 8, 2024.
The announcement came the same day that SAG-AFTRA approved a tentative deal to end the 118-day actors strike.
The third installment of the “Venom” series, which is untitled at this time, was originally set for a July 12, 2024, release date. Kelly Marcel, who wrote and produced the first two “Venom” movies, directs the upcoming superhero film from a screenplay she wrote. Marcel and Hardy developed “Venom 3’s” story and produce alongside Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal and Hutch Parker.

Let’s-a go! “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” Universal and Illumination’s spring box office smash, is landing on Netflix in time for the holidays.
It will debut on the streaming service on Dec. 3, months after grossing $1.36 billion in global ticket sales. The animated adventure will still be available on Peacock, the platform owned by NBCUniversal, where it premiered in August. Universal struck a licensing deal to let “Mario” play on Netflix, which has far more subscribers than Peacock.
A collaboration between Universal, Illumination and Nintendo, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” became a four-quadrant hit and the first movie of the year to cross the $1 billion mark. The marketing for Disney and 20th Studios’ “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” got off to a strong start with 75 million views in 24 hours across platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, X/Twitter and more, Variety has learned. Social engagement for the trailer came in with 72,000 mentions in 24 hours, boosted by 11,000 TikTok comments and a top 10 trend on X. The studio launched a trailer tease the day before the official clip’s drop, and that earned 25 million views in 24 hours. All in all, “Kingdom” content earned a combined 100 million views during the film’s marketing launch period.
While the full “Kingdom” trailer debuted to a sturdy 75 million views in 24 hours, that number of course does not compete with such recent Disney blockbusters as “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (172 million views), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (148 million) and “The Little Mermaid” (104 million views). “The Marvels” is getting ready to take flight at the box office, but it won’t be as sky-high as its predecessor “Captain Marvel” and many of its fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.
The latest MCU adventure has made $6.6 million in previews at the box office. “The Marvels” is expected to make between $60 million and $65 million in its opening this weekend. It’s a far cry from Brie Larson’s first MCU outing as Captain Marvel, which opened to $153 million in 2019 from $20.7 million in Thursday previews. That movie, which ended up crossing the $1 billion mark, had the added bonus of releasing between “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” and was the first female-led MCU film.
The “Captain Marvel” sequel is also expected to fall below this year’s two previous Marvel movies, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” which made $104 million and $118 million in their opening,...

One thing must be made clear right out of the gate: The Killer is not going to be remembered as David Fincher’s greatest film. At the same time, it is still rather great in its own right. Where this would sound like damning with faint praise if discussing other directors’ filmography, even mid-tier Fincher remains something special in a way that grows on you. Much like Michael Fassbender’s dorky yet deadly assassin, his latest is a film that is bitterly funny in a way few of his past works have been (the closest being Gone Girl) while still bringing an almost obsessive attention to detail, down to his lead not even blinking on camera, that ensures it feels like solidly familiar territory for him. The film also succeeds at being different things to different people, which makes it interesting to deconstruct what ensures it works so well.

A documentary about the shaping of trans identity in the shadow of patriarchal society from a first-time filmmaker who was once mentored by philosopher Jacques Derrida sounds, on paper, like homework. But trans writer-turned-director Paul B. Preciado’s “Orlando, My Political Biography” is hardly so, instead revealing itself as a playful and joyous ode to how transness calls out the social order’s inherent fictions, binaries, and normativities — and it’s also a loving paean to the prose of Virginia Woolf.
The great British writer’s “Orlando: A Biography,” about a noble who changes genders in their sleep across a 300-year lifespan, already inspired a great Sally Potter film, 1992’s “Orlando” starring Tilda Swinton. But Preciado’s film essay, populated by a colorful cast of sparky trans characters worthy of a Pedro Almodóvar fresco, is a fitting heir to “Orlando’s” literary and cinematic bona fides, both an embrace for...

After “The Whale” last year, many movie fans wondered what Darren Aronofsky would helm next. Well, IndieWire reports that the director will work with A24 again for his next project, which is about the last thing anyone expects (and probably the last movie anyone needs to see). Aronofsky’s next film will be a biopic about the life of tech mogul, SpaceX CEO, and X owner Elon Musk: a man who, for all of the wrong reasons, exemplifies the present like no other.

The Marvels premieres in theaters this weekend, marking the return of Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau. But while the Marvel Cinematic Universe has created its own narrative for the hero's origin story, the comic books that inspired the franchise saw Rambeau develop in a very different direction, far from what the cinematic version of the character has established. Her direct involvement with the events that shaped the Marvel Universe's reality gave Rambeau a very respectable reputation, as she continued to find her own place in the universe when she wasn't fighting an alien army. Here's everything you need to know about Monica Rambeau's comic book history before seeing The Marvels.

The scrapped “Coyote Vs. Acme” has now garnered a filmmakers vs. Warner Bros. campaign on social media.

The year was 1979 and a young Austrian muscle hunk named Arnold Schwarzenegger, who just two years earlier had made a splash in the bodybuilding documentary Pumping Iron, was looking to make a name for himself as a Hollywood actor. A former stunt person named Hal Needham had recently scored a smash hit with his directorial debut, Smokey and the Bandit, an adrenaline-fueled road romp about two renegades (Burt Reynolds and Sally Field) involved in a high-speed chase from the law.

Depending on who you talk to, spooky season extends far beyond October 31, and to keep that haunting atmosphere going this month Warner Bros. is set to release The Nun II on 4K Uhd on Blu-ray and DVD on November 14. The sequel follows Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) as she once again must face off against the evil spirit known as Valak. This may ruffle some feathers: speaking to Le Monde about his latest film “The Killer,” David Fincher made some semi-controversial remarks regarding the state of the filmmaking industry. His take? Netflix, the streamer that’s produced his last two films, is the best place in Hollywood to make movies right now. What’s more, cinematic culture needs to accept that the home distribution service offers “optimal representation” for films over the movie theater experience.

Look, in order to write about film for a living, you truly have to love the medium of movies unconditionally. So, believe me when I say that it's genuinely difficult to imagine a less appealing combination of words than the ones in the headline above and which I'm going to attempt to make sense of here. Hot off the divisive reactions and internet memes that followed the release of last year's "The Whale," visionary filmmaker Darren Aronofsky has apparently lined up his next project, and it's almost guaranteed to be even more controversial than anything the director has made yet -- which is saying a lot!
According to Variety, Aronofsky is once again teaming up with A24, this time to adapt a biopic of someone you've probably heard about once or twice in the last several months: the richest man in the world, Elon Musk. The indie studio reportedly won...

Created in 2003 by Mitchell Hurwitz, Arrested Development has proved itself to be one of the most acclaimed sitcoms of the 21st century, despite its short initial run. Arrested Development aired on Fox for three seasons between 2003 and 2006, before its revival on Netflix a decade later with season four's premiere in 2013 and season five's release in 2018-2019. The series follows the selfish and dysfunctional Bluth family, described in the show's intro as "a wealthy family who lost everything" after the patriarch George Sr (Jeffrey Tambor) is arrested for financial crimes and treason.

Star Wars movies often make an impact on the film industry at large. The original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope kicked off the blockbuster cycle in 1977; Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace introduced groundbreaking special effects in 1999; and Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens launched the legacy sequel trend in 2015. One Star Wars film in particular had a subtler effect from the audience's point of view, but from an industry's perspective, George Lucas' release plan created a ripple that would forever alter the way movies are packaged, distributed, and seen around the world. It did so through an ingenious release strategy that encouraged cinemas everywhere to take a major step in the direction of digital film.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for "The Marvels."
A year after its debut, "Ms. Marvel" remains one of the best parts of Marvel Studios TV. The show was a funny, grounded yet fantastical superhero story with a refreshing focus on life outside of heroics filtered through the lens of a Disney Channel show. It grappled with complex history, like when it portrayed the Partition of India, while also giving us a delightfully absurd live-action version of a reverse harem anime, with a little bit of John Hughes sprinkled in there for good measure.
Though Kamala Khan hasn't got her own movie yet, "The Marvels" is the best implementation of movie/TV synergy from the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. No, not because it makes the transition seamless. On the contrary, bridging the movies and the TV is quite messy. Unless you are caught up, the movie does very little to...

When “For All Mankind” first premiered on Apple TV+ in 2019, the period drama promised an in-depth look at the space race of the early ’70s. But this is not your usual NASA. In the world of Ron Moore’s series, the U.S.’s loss in the space race has a domino effect that begins with a heavy investment in sending women to space and culminates in everything from John Lennon’s survival to America’s first female president.
The horrors persist and so do we, both in our world and on “For All Mankind.” Women astronauts did not magically fix geopolitics, the patriarchy, racism, unrestrained capitalism, or the human body’s vulnerability to radiation (Season 2’s “The Grey” is one of the best season finales of any television show). But one of the show’s core tenets is that its version of humanity — and the post-war powers — gained a...

Let’s start with the good news: “Manodrome” runs zero risk of inadvertently launching an online army of right wing grifters who use their misunderstanding of its message to hawk dubious supplements and training courses 25 years after its release. Which is more than can be said for David Fincher’s “Fight Club,” the movie it desperately wants to emulate. The bad news is that fact owes less to the film’s articulation of its ideas than its lack of charisma, which is almost certain to prevent it from making the kind of cultural imprint that would allow for misinterpretations in the first place.
While it’s often unfair to compare one movie so directly to another, the blatant similarities between “Manodrome” and “Fight Club” make it unavoidable here. John Trengrove’s new film follows Ralphie (Jesse Eisenberg), a directionless man who finds solace in lifting weights after being laid off from his maintenance job.

Netflix has earned a lot of goodwill from animation fans thanks to its rather successful live-action adaptation of "One Piece." Now, the streamer is hoping to cash in on that with its next big live-action remake of a hugely popular animated show: "Avatar: The Last Airbender."
Like the original, Netflix's "Last Airbender" is a fantasy epic set in a world where people can control one of the four elements, but only the Avatar can wield all of them. The show follows Aang (Gordon Cormier) as the titular Avatar, a 12-year-old who has to learn to master the elements in order to stop the evil Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim) from conquering the world. Thankfully, he isn't alone. Along for the ride are Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley) -- as well as Fire Nation prince Zuko (Dallas Liu), who vowed to capture the Avatar to reclaim his honor.

The Oscar-nominated director will adapt the recent biography by Walter Isaacson after independent studio A24 won a ‘heated’ bidding war for rights
A biopic of billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk is now in the works after independent studio A24 won the adaptation rights to Walter Isaacson’s recent biography, with Black Swan’s Darren Aronofsky on board to direct.
Variety magazine reports that A24 triumphed in a “heated competition” bidding war to acquire Isaacson’s authorised biography Elon Musk, which was published in September. It was heavily criticised in some quarters, with the Guardian describing it as a “dull, insight-free doorstop of a book”, and it generated a number of controversies itself, with Isaacson forced to correct a suggestion that Musk had ordered his Starlink satellite communications network to be turned off to stop a Ukrainian drone attack on Russian warships.

Season 2 of Invincible is finally here after an over two-and-a-half-year wait and with it comes a massively expanded cast of stars including some of the biggest names in the industry. Several of these new additions will see plenty of screen time as the season winds on, including Sterling K. Brown as the multiversal villain Angstrom Levy and Ben Schwartz as the Martian hero Shapesmith. One actor that series creator Robert Kirkman was especially thrilled to work with was voice-acting legend Peter Cullen.

Public opinion towards Marvel isn't exactly at its highest point these days. Stories of overworked VFX teams, pushed release dates, a complicated casting problem, and a seemingly endless onslaught of post-"Endgame" projects have led to a growing public ambivalence towards the expansive franchise. As fans and detractors continue to discuss the evolving function of the MCU, a subset of moviegoers and TV fans have taken to calling the latest Marvel projects "slop," bemoaning a perceived lack of visual flair in particular. While plenty of the above critiques are valid, it seems clear that these people have not been watching "Loki."

The stylish killer has long been a staple in crime films, and not just in Hollywood movies like “Collateral” and “Pulp Fiction.” The tradition spans the globe, from England (“Get Carter”) to Hong Kong (John Woo’s “The Killer“) and France (the revisionist noir films of Jean-Pierre Melville and Jean-Luc Godard). Yet for the new Netflix movie “The Killer” (no relation to the Woo film), director David Fincher wanted something different: a killer (Michael Fassbender) whose style was so nonexistent that he could just blend into the background of any city.
“In our initial conversations, David said that he didn’t want Fassbender to look cool, he wanted him to look dorky,” costume designer Cate Adams told IndieWire. “When he’s in Paris, we wanted him to look like a German tourist no one would want to go near.” That idea came from the guiding principle for the killer: Every...

The conclusion of the SAG-AFTRA strike has brought with it a number of news items, both positive and negative. The good news is that production is underway again, or soon will be, on major projects. The bad news is that a number of them are facing release date delays. For those that haven't been delayed yet, they face a race against time to finish production. One of those projects that hasn't yet been delayed is Netflix's Stranger Things.

Making main competition at the 49th Huelva Ibero-American Film Festival in Spain, “Prison in the Andes” (“Penal Cordillera”) trains a spotlight on the scandalous imprisonment of five high-ranking officers of General Augusto Pinochet’s brutal military junta.
We find these men serving out their sentences amounting to some 800 hundred years in a well-appointed mansion with a pool, gardens and aviaries in the Andes foothills and where their so-called guards wait on them hand and foot. At times, violence erupts among the guards, who are virtual prisoners themselves.
“I wanted the story to be a metaphor for Chilean society,” said its writer-director Felipe Carmona who chose to make this tale of misplaced justice his debut feature. While the facts around the case are depicted in the film, he has inserted elements of fantasy and fictional scenes to bring the story to life, imagining the conversations they would have had among themselves.

Time to get your Sunday best suits and gowns pressed and ready to go, because Season 2 of The Gilded Age is now here. Before the Emmy-winning drama graced HBO subscribers with its presence, creator Julian Fellowes was responsible for another prim and proper drama series that you may have heard of. That series, of course, is Downton Abbey, which became a global phenomenon following its premiere in 2010. Over the course of six television seasons and two feature films, audiences around the globe fell in love with the family life and strife of the aristocratic Crawley clan following the unprecedented tragedy of the Titanic. During its five-year run, Downton Abbey would take home an astounding fifteen Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2022, nearly a decade after Downton Abbey closed its doors, Julian Fellowes returned to television with a new yet familiar series, The Gilded Age.

Spoilers for "Attack on Titan" follow.
Despite all the twists along the way, the final arc of "Attack On Titan" returned to the initial premise (and threat) of the series: humanity face-to-face with extinction in the form of humanoid giants. These giants march across the Earth as "The Rumbling," flattening everything in their path underfoot. As our heroes fight to stop this onslaught in the series finale, the episode cuts to a crowd of people running from the advancing Titans.
Once they reach a sea cliff, many people start pouring over the side (a beat taken from Chapter 134 of Hajime Isayama's original manga). Then, the episode's animation team (led by directors Yuichiro Hayashi and Tokio Igarashi) makes a striking color choice.
