Stars: Aria Mia Loberti, Louis Hofmann, Lars Eidinger, Hugh Laurie

Votes: 10,990

Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel unfolds onscreen in this anticipated adaptation, detailing a rich World War II tale told from two unique perspectives. Readers are counting on director Shawn Levy ("Stranger Things," 'The Adam Project') to maintain the book's emotional touchpoints and to bring dramatic effect to the war-torn story, played out by Aria Mia Loberti in her first acting role as young, blind Parisian girl Marie-Laure, alongside impressive co-stars like Mark Ruffalo, Hugh Laurie, and Louis Hofmann (“Dark”).

Series premieres on Netflix Thursday, Nov. 2.

2. Invincible (2021– )

TV-MA | 50 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

An adult animated series based on the Skybound/Image comic about a teenager whose father is the most powerful superhero on the planet.

Stars: Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Zazie Beetz

Votes: 171,452

Season 1 of Prime Video’s hit series “Invincible” ended with high school superhero Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) battling his not-so-heroic father, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). Now, the Robert Kirkman comic book adaptation is returning for a second season with more than 20 notable new voices, including Tatiana Maslany, Calista Flockhart, and Sterling K. Brown as multiverse scientist Angstrom Levy. Can Mark take on the new baddies threatening his city without becoming like his fascistic father? With Season 2’s looming multidimensional danger and Kirkman’s classic subversive style, it’s clear that in this eight-episode season anything’s possible.

Season 2 premieres on Prime Video Friday, Nov. 3.

3. Priscilla (2023)

R | 113 min | Biography, Drama, Music

77 Metascore

When teenage Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley, the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a vulnerable best friend.

Director: Sofia Coppola | Stars: Cailee Spaeny, Jacob Elordi, Ari Cohen, Dagmara Dominczyk

Votes: 3,221

So, we have seen Sofia Coppola's conventionally made biopic and processed the frustrations we had with it, since it’s challenging to watch Priscilla Presley's early life with Elvis Presley gradually confining her to a jumpsuit straitjacket. Jacob Elordi dominates the first two acts — and jeez, is he good. Meanwhile, Cailee Spaeny is coltish, terrified, and barely audible at times. We almost forget SHE left him, and when that moment comes, Coppola's filmmaking dovetails with Spaeny's performance and we are reminded who the movie is named after. This is a quiet study of a confined life moving toward freedom, without the bombast of a pop soundtrack.

In theaters Friday, Nov. 3.

While there’s no expectation that 'The Marvels' will match the box office haul of 2019’s 'Captain Marvel' (which raked in over $1 billion worldwide), this sequel is sure to be a crowd pleaser for MCU fans eager to see the team-up of Brie Larson, Iman Vellani (aka Ms. Marvel), and Teyonah Parris ("WandaVision").

If we ever had an anxiety dream about two creators teaming up, it would star Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie. Seriously, we can imagine there was a therapist on site as they filmed the first season of this Showtime/Paramount+ series that has its sights set on a do-gooder couple who just might singlehandedly be responsible for gentrifying a small town. With 'Poor Things' and now this, keep it weird, Emma Stone.

Drama, Mystery, Thriller | Completed

Darby Hart, a Gen Z amateur sleuth, attempts to solve a murder at a secluded retreat.

The marketing here really wants you to know that Det. Emma Corrin is totally Gen Z, as culty creator duo Brit Marlin and Zal Batmanglij return with a limited series four years after Netflix canceled "The OA" unceremoniously, leaving its cult audience in a lurch. (They even kiboshed the idea of a wrap-up movie for the series.) This mystery partially takes place in Antarctica, and you can imagine it is no conventional detective story. Promising to twist the genre into a new shape, Corrin leads what could be the finest cast of the year.

18. Saltburn (2023)

63 Metascore

A student at Oxford University finds himself drawn into the world of a charming and aristocratic classmate, who invites him to his eccentric family's sprawling estate for a summer never to be forgotten.

Director: Emerald Fennell | Stars: Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Archie Madekwe, Sadie Soverall

Votes: 1,194

With its peak 2000s setting, all Harry Potter novels and MGMT songs, we hear Emerald Fennell's follow up to 'Promising Young Woman' is more of a B-movie attraction in comparison to its Oscar-winning predecessor – a little sleazier, less morally complex, and certainly not a proper adaptation of "Brideshead Revisited," the novel that serves as the inspiration here. If 'Fair Play' brought back the '90s erotic thriller, maybe all 'Saltburn' really wants to do is take down the upper class one amoral, conniving turn at a time.

In theaters Friday, Nov. 17.

22. Thanksgiving (2023)

R | 107 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

After a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy, a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts - the birthplace of the infamous holiday.

Director: Eli Roth | Stars: Rick Hoffman, Gina Gershon, Patrick Dempsey, Milo Manheim

Votes: 123

Back in 2007, movie-goers were treated to a throwback theater experience with ‘Grindhouse,’ which combined two feature-length films into a single three-hour exploitation extravaganza similar to the 42nd Street cinema offerings of old. Although genre fans enjoyed the films from Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, a certain cult following sprung up for the movie’s equally entertaining fake trailers. Now, director Eli Roth has actualized his fictional film in ‘Thanksgiving.’ Although it was reported that Roth began work on the film as early as 2010, it took 15 years to bring the seasonal slasher to the screen. With the director’s signature gory kills and comedic characterization, 'Thanksgiving' promises to deliver the same grindhouse nostalgia 'Grindhouse' kickstarted so many years ago.

In theaters Friday, Nov. 17.

23. Fargo (2014–2024)

TV-MA | 53 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

Various chronicles of deception, intrigue, and murder in and around frozen Minnesota. All of these tales mysteriously lead back one way or another to Fargo, North Dakota.

Stars: Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Allison Tolman, Colin Hanks

Votes: 392,108

FX’s popular anthology series bakes blackmail, brutal murder, and a rotating cast of quirky characters into a comedic-yet-suspenseful adventure season after season. Much like a Midwest mother’s casserole (or hot dish, if you will) the ingredients are ever-changing, but the outcome is irresistible, and always with a nod to the Coen Brothers’ 1996 film. Season 5 promises a more present-day drama studded with stars including Juno Temple as boobie-trap-setting housewife Dorothy ‘Dot’ Lyon, Jon Hamm as rancher/preacher/lawman, Roy Tillman, and Lamorne Morris and Richa Moorjani as a pair of police deputies.

Season 5 premieres on Hulu/FX on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

24. Wish (II) (2023)

PG | 92 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy | Completed

Wish will follow a young girl named Asha who wishes on a star and gets a more direct answer than she bargained for when a trouble-making star comes down from the sky to join her.

Directors: Chris Buck, Fawn Veerasunthorn | Stars: Evan Peters, Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk, Ariana DeBose

Disney is commemorating its 100-year anniversary by leaning heavily into nostalgia and sentimentality for its newest animated feature. But in a good way! The concept of wishes coming to life may be a bit on-the-nose considering the studio’s theme music, but the appeal is universal and the animation (which combines old-school watercolor with computer animation) looks stunning. If you’re not convinced this will be THE holiday movie of the season, consider the fact that the creative team is headed up by co-writer (and head of Disney Animation) Jennifer Lee, who has pulled together several of her ‘Frozen’ and ‘Frozen II’ collaborators for this project.

In theaters Friday, Nov. 22.

25. Napoleon (2023)

R | 158 min | Action, Adventure, Biography | Completed

An epic that details the checkered rise and fall of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and his relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his wife, Josephine.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Vanessa Kirby, Joaquin Phoenix, Ludivine Sagnier, Rupert Everett

At 85 years old, director Ridley Scott isn’t giving any indication he’s slowing down, returning to the kind of grand scale filmmaking he has brought to life in films like 'Gladiator' and 'Kingdom of Heaven.' Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix brings ruthless swagger to his portrayal of the French emperor, while Vanessa Kirby matches his energy as his wife, Josephine. Guaranteed to be the top movie among dads over the holiday weekend.

In theaters Friday, Nov. 22.

26. Dream Scenario (2023)

R | 102 min | Comedy, Horror

74 Metascore

A hapless family man finds his life turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams. When his nighttime appearances take a nightmarish turn, Paul is forced to navigate his newfound stardom.

Director: Kristoffer Borgli | Stars: Lily Bird, Nicolas Cage, Julianne Nicholson, Jessica Clement

Votes: 1,239

Nicolas Cage returns to the big screen to close out 2023 with a surrealist comedy from writer-director Kristoffer Borgli (‘Sick of Myself’). Produced by Lars Knudsen (‘The Northman’) and A24 darling Ari Aster, ‘Dream Scenario’ was inspired by the true story of a university professor who claims he was fired due to “cancel culture.” This led Borgli on an exploration of “canceled” individuals who, in Borgli’s words, share “a very narcissistic and almost delusional tone” and “felt they had done nothing wrong.” With supporting performances from Julianne Nicholson, Michael Cera, Tim Meadows, and Dylan Baker, this dark satire is poised to be a hit with the A24 movie crowd.

In theaters Friday, Nov. 22.
